Really Obsessed With: Dressing up Khaki

I'm packing my bags to head back to Cali for my internship, and I've noticed that out of the slew of new purchases to bring back, khaki-colored pieces dominate the bunch. I know, I know--the word khaki does bring to mind ho-hum boring-sauce images (Target employees, MaryAnn from the Babysitters Club, my 11th grade science teacher), but it really doesn't have to. It's the perfect blank canvas for those offbeat accessories that we're afraid to wear. Pair your Gap tent dress or you new Built by Wendy trench with bright tights, sequined bags, lacqured belts, and lots of candy-colored jewelry.

Channeling: Rainbow Brite

Daddy Legit can testify to the fact that when I was a wee legit, I used to watch the same episode of Rainbow Brite (the one where they lose all their color to Murky and Lurky) multiple times a day, seven days a week. Reviving this gem of TVland might not be a bad idea now, considering the whole colorblocking sentiments all over the runways. The Built by Wendy shirts and MoonBoots should get you on track.

Fresh Junk: Denim Short Shorts

If there's anything that I can always get excited about, it's the first shorts day of the year--but now we're faced with a couple problems that weren't there before (mainly, that your dungarees are too small and the fact that the boys won't play with you anymore if you've got more hair on your legs than they do). The latter can be taken care of with a nice visit with your razor, but what about the former? Denim short shorts are kind of risque, hard to pull off if you don't want to look like a beezie hillbilly, and only flatter certain body types--but if you do them right, they'll turn you into a stone cold foxy killer. If you're going for it, make sure there's no frills or pooch-ery around the crotchal region (I shouldn't have to remind you why), and look for flattering pockets, and enough length to hide them cheeks.

Really Obsessed With: Jewel Tones

Me and Lil' J stopped by Home Depot to pick out paint colors for her new apartment. Now, while Lil' J was getting serious about her walls(hazelnut or desert brown?), I was grabbing all my favorite colors. After dumping out my purse at home I discovered that the colors I picked for paint were the same ones that I pick when I go shopping. 90% of my wardrobe is filled with plum's, mustard's, evergreen's and navy's. And why am I so drawn towards these colors? I actually have no idea, but it might have nothing to do with age--the bold markers were always my favorite :)

Just Purchased: Gap Leather Jacket

Readers, the quest is over. For months, I've been looking for the perfect black leather jacket, and I think I've found it--in Gap--of all places. Although it's lacking a hood, it's got everything else that I want: a bit of a sheen, a feminine cut, enough hardware to keep it from looking Macy's, and a modest price tag (marked down to $69.97). The victory party invitation will be sent out shortly.

Really Obsessed With: Leotards

I've always thought that I'd make one hell of a ballerina, but then again, basing my entire perception of ballerinas on my one-year dance class stint in the first grade might not be the best in empirical judgement. But, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate ballet-chic aesthetics. I've done the shoe, the tights, the cardigan and alas, even the bun--but it's time to balls up and go for the full monty: leotards. Now, before you all point and laugh, let me explain. Just like how you are NOT supposed to wear leggings w/o a long top, you are NOT supposed to wear a leotard without pants if you don't want to look like a fool. Can't commit? Get a v neck cami and tuck the bad boy into your pants.

Channeling: This Girl

As the song of choice for many fashion houses during this years' NY Fashion Week, "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn and John has been on loop on my iTunes playlist for awhile now. What's more, the accompanying music video features two of my favorite things: animation, and birthday parties. The female protagonist in the bit is kinda Nancy Drew, kinda Tenenbaumy and a whole lot of fox. Try it yourself with a plain white skirt (in an updated tulip or high-waist) and a button down shirt. Don't forget your old-school headphones at home though--the party wouldn't be the same without them.

Usually, browsing through the used book store in Uptown is like digging through a really bad section at Saver's. But yesturday, fate was on my side, and I was fortuitous enough to stumble across Jamel Shabazz's "Back in the Days". And seriously, it was amazing--doorknocker earrings, gazelle sunglasses, kangols and so many color saturated adidas that my corneas nearly gave out. Just Purchased: Tote Bag

A couple of things prompted me to buy this tote bag. Number one, the Berkeley Mayor has been proposing a ban on non-biodegradable plastic grocery bags. Number two, I'm getting my own place in a couple weeks and grocery shopping's going to become part of my weekly regime. Third? Marc Jacobs for $10? This is a nice alternative to those exculsive Anya Hindmarch I'm Not A Plastic Bag bags.

What's What: According to Hipsters

You know that the cobrasnake and his crew were getting tired of the skinny jean and gold chains while we were still drooling over our new bootlegs. But, you also know that hipsters are "so over" trends right when you see more than two other waif-y types wearing the same thing at yesturday night's Jena Malone concert. Taking that rule into hand, I've compiled a list of things I saw more than once, and things I didn't. Out includes white lensless rims (or lensless rims for that matter) and those ubiquitous American Apparel sweatshirts. In? Apparently the Duran Duran shirt, hair lariats and those platform sneakers you wore in the 5th grade.

Really Obsessed With: Colorblocks

Colorblock t-shirts were pretty boss in the 80's, but they've been relegated to the bottoms of your mother's drawers along with her stonewash and nylon. However, cobrasnakers and misshapers have been slowly breaking these gems out. Wear these with monocolor pieces in complementary colors. From left to right: Spring and Clifton, I forget (whoops), American Apparel leotard and unisex shirt.

Channeling: Margot Tenenbaum

I am actually fairly terrified of Margot Tenenbaum, but only in that really humiliating way because you know that if she burnt you with her cigerrete, you'd wear that motherrfucking burn like a medal of honor. Be ready to hit the courts with your "bro(s)" in tennis dresses and keep your frail shoulders warm with a fat fur coat. Pull your bobbed hair back from your smoldering eyes with a flat plastic hairclip. You might want to reconsider the whole wooden finger thing though (oh yeah, and probably the pseudo incest).

Fresh Junk: Creatures of Comfort

Located on Melrose in LA, Creatures of Comfort boasts some of the raddest pieces I've seen in a while. For example, check the sweet trench/members-only hybrid khaki jacket: if you need one new piece, this is it. And while I never imagined that I'd consider sequined short-shorts a staple, this one's making me wonder how I've survived without it. Also? Denim vests, slouchy leather bags, robot mugs and the sickest vampire teeth necklaces this side of Transylvania. Best of all, all online purchases are 15% off for the month of May!

Really Obsessed With: My Tax Returns

So I fucked up my taxes and basically, instead of being refunded the hundred and some dollars like I was supposed to, I received a sob-worthy stupid thirty one dollars. But hey, it's still a free $31 (if you disregard that it was mine to begin with). So, to celebrate, I'm eyeing a few things: a leotard from American Apparel, those sweet boots from Urban or scarf top from Urban, or a bouquet of flowers for Mommy Legit for Mother's Day. Thoughts?

Studying for finals no time for pucntuation or real sentances or spellcheck for that matter but I'm studing for History and I just read a chatper about Sly Stone and it's hella interesting. Buy a fat chain, wear a white faux vest in the kids section for a better, shorter fit, and go the leotard route. ok bye better posts wehn my hell week is over

In this case, the dude is Peter, and the trends include sequined dresses, trapeze dresses, and (the unfortunate) bra dress. And yes I was busy. And yes, this is actually how Lau Lau is in real life. And yes. It's sophisticated humor, damnit (read: filled with inside jokes and Borat references).

Celebrate Good Times: Cinco de Mayo

Who says Norcal can't party like Tijuana? Whether you're watching the La Hoya boxing match or mixing mojitos with your friends, keep your look summery and fresh. Topshop's hits it home with a MJ knockoff dress, and tuck a carnation behind your ear for a cutsey Chiquita look. Just try to keep the party fouling down--tequila can sometimes be a girl's worst friend.

Fresh Junk: Nylon Parkas

This is one of the few occasions when function meets fashion in a beautiful orgy filled with magazine editors and mountain climbers. If you do it the fashion house way though, prepare to bust out your lucite heels and yellow tinted glasses to weather out the conditions. For us humbler folk, avoid looking like too much of a globetrekker by pairing it with girly basics (think glitter, jewels and lots of chiffon).

Really Obsessed With: Big Bangles

Imagine this: you're wearing a new white eyelet slip with the most adorably cut sailor shorts and a pair of sweet flats. You look in the mirror and you almost vomit of sacchirine overdose. What do you do? You grab for your badass pile of bangles. Go a couple of gauges bigger so you can slip one over your elbow and wear it a la Cleopatra, or pile them on as a throwback to those good ol' friendship bracelet days. Forever21 makes it easy to indulge in this obsession, and at all under $10, buy one for every day of the week.

Just Purchased: Black Boots

My dad usually doesn't have much imput on my outfits besides the ocassional tag police citation, but he made a point to tell me that my favorite pair of brown boots looked like they'd been dragged to hell and back. This may be the only reason I was able to shell out a fifty for these bad boys. I'm still hesitant to say I'm absolutely in love--sometimes I'll look down and see the feet of a sanitation worker, or even worse, an SS guard, but I'll give them some time. What do you think?
